What’s the #1 Diabetes Symptom?

Obesity.  But is it really the symptom, or the cause.

Really, poor food choices are the cause. But, we’ll get to that later.  Plenty of thin people get type 2 diabetes, but they are in the minority. The most common precursor of diabetes is excessive weight.  Since diabetes starts 20 years before you find it, perhaps diabetes causes obesity. When our bodies have too much sugar and can’t take care of it right, it puts it away into fat cells. The more sugar, the more fat, the more risk of diabetes. The cycle goes on.

But not just any excessive weight that causes a problem. People who gain evenly throughout their bodies tend to have a lower risk than those that carry their weight around their middle.  Weight around the middle is indicative of a lifestyle of sitting too often. A desk job, followed by watching TV is a big risk factor. Plus, people who gain weight evenly tend to have more muscle, which seems to be a deterrent for diabetes.

Gaining and losing weight, yo-yo dieting, is a huge risk, and can make you 3-10 times more likely to get diabetes. It can also make you much more susceptible to weight around your middle.  But, chances are, if you are reading this, you either already have diabetes or are at great risk. Most likely, you have weight around your belly, the #1 diabetes symptom!

So, let’s get rid of it.

First thing: lower your sugar intake!

You can’t lower your blood glucose number without lowering your glucose intake. If it goes in, it’s got to be processed, stored, or burned. And if you were burning it, you wouldn’t have the weight.
