4 Harmful Cosmetic Ingredients
4 Harmful Cosmetic Ingredients
↓
Many ingredients in cosmetics can be harmful to your health. When creating NV™, Jeunesse did not include talc, phthalates, parabens or sulfates. Here’s why:
↓
- Talc
The safety of talc in cosmetics is highly debated. It is uncertain whether all talc used in cosmetics is free of asbestos, a known carcinogen. Talc naturally occurs in the earth, but asbestos, also a naturally occurring mineral, may be found in close proximity to talc. For this reason, it is believed some talc – used in everything from rice to baby powder – could be contaminated with the cancer-causing asbestos.Reference: Read the latest about talc from the FDA

It has been argued that phthalates cause cancer, endocrine disruption and reproductive and developmental toxicity. Based on animal testing and human studies, Polish researchers are questioning whether phthalate exposures could be the leading cause of human reproductive disorders. Due to health concerns, the phthalates DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP are restricted in the European Union.References: What ingredients to watch out for in makeup.

Commonly used as a cosmetic preservative, parabens are potential endocrine disruptors as they mimic estrogen. This estrogen-mimicking quality can lead to breast cancer, reduced testosterone and reproductive harm. Regarding the application of parabens daily to the skin, links have been found that parabens aid malignant melanoma.References: More on precautions with paraben

Sulfates are used in household cleaners and car engine cleaners but are also popular ingredients in shampoo and makeup. Mild to severe eye irritation can be experienced with sulfate-containing products. Sulfates also strip away moisture from the outer layer of skin, causing skin to become dry and inflamed. More serious side effects, such as cancer and organ toxicity, are believed possible, but these have not been proved with scientific research.References: Potentially harmful effects of sulfates
